Meeting people at IIT Goa
IIT Goa is one of India's youngest and smallest IITs, running since 2016 from a temporary campus inside Goa Engineering College at Farmagudi, Ponda, so its batches are small, close-knit and still building traditions like Cultrang, the techno-cultural fest started in 2020.
IIT Goa has run from a temporary campus inside Goa Engineering College at Farmagudi, Ponda, since it opened in 2016, while plans for a permanent campus have moved through several sites.
The story of IIT Goa
IIT Goa was established on 30 July 2016 as one of the new IITs, with IIT Bombay acting as mentor for its first three years. Prof. B.K. Mishra was the founding director, and Prof. Dhirendra S. Katti now leads the institute.
From the start, the institute has operated from a temporary campus at Goa Engineering College in Farmagudi, about 29 km southeast of Panaji. Land for a permanent campus has been identified more than once, but proposed sites have run into local opposition and the search has taken years.
IIT Goa began with 30 seats per branch and has grown to around 150 BTech seats, offering computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and mathematics and computing, along with MTech and PhD programmes.
What the campus is like socially
Life at IIT Goa feels more like a small college than a sprawling IIT. With a few hundred undergraduates, almost everyone knows each other, and hostel corridors and the canteen are where friendships form. Space is tight on a borrowed campus, which makes clubs and late-night canteen sessions even more central.
Being in Goa is the obvious perk. Ponda is in the green heart of the state, and weekends often mean trips to the beaches, Panaji or Old Goa. Because the institute is so young, students build the fests and clubs themselves, and anyone willing to take charge can shape what IIT Goa becomes.
Traditions every IIT Goa student knows
- Cultrang: IIT Goa's techno-cultural fest, started in 2020, with music, dance, drama and technical events.
- Chakravyuh: The intra-college sports fest, with tournaments across cricket, football, basketball and more.
- Flock: A combined sports and cultural intra-college fest that brings the whole campus together.
- Anti-Ragging Week: The institute observes an anti-ragging week every August, part of a deliberately friendly start for new students.
Campus lore and insider spots
- An IIT inside another college: IIT Goa has shared Goa Engineering College's Farmagudi campus since 2016, a running in-joke among its students.
- No seniors to copy: The first batch arrived with no seniors at all and had to invent every club, fest and tradition from scratch.
- Thirty seats a branch: IIT Goa started with just 30 seats per branch, one of the smallest IIT intakes ever.
- The campus question: Where the permanent campus will finally be built is one of the most discussed topics among students and in Goa itself.

Careers, internships and placements
IIT Goa runs a central placement process with recruiters in software, electronics, analytics and core engineering. Computer science and mathematics and computing draw strong interest, and the small batch size means students often get more individual attention from the placement team.
Students commonly build their profiles through coding, research projects with faculty and internships, and many go on to higher studies in India and abroad.
Rivalries and eternal debates
IIT Goa students compare notes with the other 2016 IITs, especially IIT Dharwad, which shared the same mentor, IIT Bombay. In Goa itself, the friendly comparison is with BITS Pilani's Goa campus, the state's other big engineering name.
