IIM Rohtak is the 2010 IIM about 70 km from Delhi that became the first IIM to offer a law degree, and its 200-acre Sunaria campus mixes MBA students, IPM undergrads and law students in one young community.

The story of IIM Rohtak

IIM Rohtak was set up in 2010 under the Eleventh Five-Year Plan, and its first class of 50 students began in June 2010. IIM Lucknow mentored it for the first three years, and P. Rameshan from IIM Kozhikode was founding director. Students first studied on the campus of Maharshi Dayanand University.

The original site for a permanent campus at Garnawati village was rejected because the land was covered under the Forest Act, so the institute built its 200-acre campus at Sunaria village instead.

IIM Rohtak launched a five-year Integrated Programme in Management in 2019 and an Integrated Programme in Law in 2021, becoming the first IIM to offer a law degree. It became an AACSB member in 2012 and was ranked 12th by NIRF in management in 2023.

What the campus is like socially

Three very different cohorts share the campus: MBA students, IPM undergrads who join after Class 12, and law students on the IPL track. The batch mix is changing too: the PGP batch inducted in June 2024 was 73% women, drawn from 24 states and union territories.

The campus is quieter and greener than the big-city IIMs, but Delhi is close enough for weekend escapes. Most of the social calendar runs through student-led councils and clubs, from the cultural fest to the entrepreneurship summit.

• Infusion: The annual cultural and sports fest, the biggest event on the student calendar.
• ManCon: The management conclave that brings industry leaders to campus.
• Udaan and Ignitus: The E&I Council's annual entrepreneurship summit and its business plan competition. The January 2020 edition drew 400+ participants.
• Induction: A two-day welcome for each new PGP batch, held in late June.

• The forest that moved the campus: The first campus site was abandoned because it fell under the Forest Act.
• MDU beginnings: The first batches studied on Maharshi Dayanand University's campus before the move to Sunaria.
