Ashoka is a fully residential liberal arts university in Rajiv Gandhi Education City, Sonipat, about an hour from Delhi, founded in 2014 and funded by a large group of philanthropists rather than a single owner. Because almost everyone lives on campus, clubs, dorm life and late-night conversations are the centre of social life.

The story of Ashoka University

Ashoka began as a project nicknamed "Project Nobel", the half-serious hope that an Indian liberal arts university might one day produce a Nobel laureate. Naukri.com founder Sanjeev Bikhchandani, investor Ashish Dhawan and former ISB dean Pramath Raj Sinha were among its driving forces, and more than 46 founders eventually chipped in, a collective-philanthropy model rare in Indian higher education.

The university opened in 2014 on a 25-acre campus in Sonipat designed by Perkins Eastman, and took its name from the Mauryan emperor Ashoka. A second 27-acre campus became operational in 2021, pushing the student body to around 4,500.

Its leadership has included historian Rudrangshu Mukherjee, now Chancellor, political scientist Pratap Bhanu Mehta, Malabika Sarkar and astrophysicist Somak Raychaudhury. Rishikesha T. Krishnan was appointed Vice-Chancellor in June 2026. In February 2023 the Economics department, ranked India's best by RePEc in 2020, became the Rakesh Jhunjhunwala School of Economics and Finance.

What the campus is like socially

Ashoka is a bubble, and students say so affectionately and critically in equal measure. Classes are small and discussion-heavy, the core curriculum throws physics students into philosophy seminars and vice versa, and arguments that start in class carry on in the dining hall and dorm corridors. Faculty include well-known names such as historian Upinder Singh and economist Ashwini Deshpande, so office hours can feel like a masterclass.

Because the campus is far from the city, students build their own social life: club showcases, open mics, theatre productions, sports and the annual Banjaara fest. Dorm rules have historically been more relaxed than many Indian campuses, with no curfews on movement around campus, and student government debates over campus policy are a regular feature of the year.

Traditions every Ashokan knows

• Banjaara: Ashoka's annual cultural fest, launched with the theme celebrating the traveller in you. It runs inter-college competitions over two days and is the biggest event on the student calendar.
• Club inductions: At the start of the year, selective societies like Abhinaya and The Green Room hold auditions and portfolio rounds, and the whole first-year batch talks about little else for weeks.
• Scholarship season: Each year the campus celebrates students who win Rhodes, Chevening and other international scholarships, and the results spread through every group chat.
• Convocation goodbyes: Graduation week is a big, emotional affair for a campus where everyone has lived together for years.

• Project Nobel: The university's working title before it opened, a reminder of how big its founders dreamed.
• The GREAT Debate win: In February 2016 an Ashoka team of Archit Krishna, Yashvi Ganeriwal, Aditya Khemka and Isherjeet Singh won the British High Commission's GREAT Debate national final, a competition that drew over 600 institutions.
• Access floors: In 2016-17, after a trial week and a student survey, dorms were split into access and non-access floors for visiting hours, a compromise students still reference.
• JimJams: The western choir vertical of Vistaar, the music society, and probably the most fun name on campus.

Careers, internships and placements

Ashoka does not run on a single placement culture the way an IIT or IIM does. Graduates go into consulting, finance, education, development and policy, media and research, and a large number head abroad for postgraduate study on international scholarships.

Students are advised to build a portfolio early: research assistantships with faculty, internships, writing and society leadership. The one-year Young India Fellowship, Ashoka's postgraduate diploma, also brings a cohort of graduates from other universities onto campus each year.

Rivalries and eternal debates

Ashoka's neighbour in Sonipat's education city is O.P. Jindal Global University, and the two are compared endlessly on Quora for fees, faculty and vibe. Ashokans also love to debate whether their pedagogy beats the legacy and peer network of top DU colleges like Hindu, St. Stephen's and LSR, and FLAME and Krea round out the private liberal arts comparison set.

With a new Vice-Chancellor from mid-2026, a second campus now in use and a growing economics school, Ashoka is in a phase of expansion, while debates about campus rules and student representation remain a regular part of student life.
