OP Jindal Global University is a fully residential campus in Sonipat, Haryana, just north of Delhi, where more than 16,000 students across law, business, international affairs and the liberal arts live, study and socialise in one self-contained bubble.

The story of OP Jindal Global University

JGU was established in 2009 under the Haryana Private Universities (Amendment) Act. Industrialist Naveen Jindal founded it and named it after his father, the steel industrialist Om Prakash Jindal. Its first school, Jindal Global Law School, set the tone for an internationally minded, research-heavy university.

Dr C. Raj Kumar, a Rhodes Scholar with degrees from Oxford, Harvard and Delhi University, was appointed founding Vice-Chancellor in 2009 and still leads JGU. In 2020 the Government of India named JGU an Institution of Eminence.

From one law school, JGU has grown into a university with schools in business, international affairs, liberal arts, psychology, banking and finance, environment, languages, design and public health. Jindal Global Law School was ranked India's top law school in the QS rankings by subject from 2020 to 2024.

What the campus is like socially

Because the campus sits outside the city, JGU life is almost entirely residential. Students eat, study, train and party within the same few hundred metres, so friendships form fast and gossip travels faster. Neighbouring Ashoka University makes Sonipat feel like a small education corridor, and Delhi trips are a weekend event rather than a daily commute.

The academic culture is international. JGU lists more than 620 collaborations with foreign universities, exchanges with schools like Yale, NYU and Keio, and a faculty with many international degrees. In law especially, moots, internships and research centres fill the calendar alongside classes.
