The story of IIM Sambalpur

IIM Sambalpur was announced in 2014 and founded on 23 September 2015, mentored in its early years by IIM Indore. The first batches studied at a temporary campus at Jyoti Vihar, Burla. At the first convocation on 7 April 2017, Board Chair and then SBI Chairperson Arundhati Bhattacharya addressed the graduates.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for the permanent campus by video conference on 2 January 2021, and inaugurated the finished campus on 3 February 2024. The campus is 4-star GRIHA rated, with Odisha's ikat patterns mapped onto its brick facade and buildings named Koutilya, Thakshasila and Konark.

Under Director Mahadeo Jaiswal, the institute runs an MBA, an executive MBA, doctoral programmes, bachelor's programmes in data science and management and in public policy, and a Delhi campus for working professionals. NIRF ranked it 34th among management institutions in 2025.

What the campus is like socially

The new campus sits in the countryside, about 5 km from Hirakud railway station and 27 km from Sambalpur town, so life is residential and close-knit across 11 hostels. The library runs 24/7, and canteen and mess culture carries a lot of the social weight.
