MDI Gurgaon is a 37-acre residential B-school on Mehrauli Road in Sukhrali, triple accredited by AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS, where club work like Illumina's live consumer research is treated almost as seriously as the classroom.

The story of MDI Gurgaon

MDI did not start as an MBA school. The Industrial Finance Corporation of India set it up in 1973 as an institute for training, consulting and research, serving managers rather than fresh graduates.

In 1986 MDI launched the National Management Programme, India's first full-time executive PGDM, a 15-month course for working managers. The two-year PGDM that most CAT takers now apply for only arrived in 1994, and it quickly became the flagship.

A second campus opened in Murshidabad, West Bengal, in 2014. Today MDI holds AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS accreditation, ranks ninth in the NIRF 2025 management list and counts more than 11,000 alumni across 54 countries.

What the campus is like socially

The two-year PGDM is famously packed. Between classes, live projects and club tasks, the campus stays awake late, and the courtyards and late-night food stalls are where most friendships form. Clubs run their own selection rounds, so the first term doubles as an audition season.

MDI is also outward-looking. About one in five postgraduate students gets a chance to study abroad through exchanges with more than 34 partner schools, including Bocconi, Copenhagen Business School and EDHEC, so the batch mixes NCR grind with a fair amount of travel.

• Imperium: MDI's flagship cultural, management and sports fest, drawing teams from IIMs, XLRI and FMS. Its signature event Nautica is a three-day business simulation.
• Delphique: The national management convention, billed as MDI's red carpet event, with the Cerebro case competition and the Vincenza business plan contest.
• Urban Illumina: A Diwali fun and food mela on campus that is really disguised market research for partner brands, running for more than 27 years.
• Rural Illumina: The same idea taken to the Dussehra fair in Pataudi, Haryana, to study rural consumers.
