Starting college in Delhi NCR goes best when you stop waiting to be found and start showing up on purpose, in your first society meeting and your first weekend out of campus.

What first year in Delhi NCR actually looks like

DU admissions now run on CUET scores through the CSAS portal, and the North/South Campus fest season (roughly February-April) doubles as an informal orientation window where new students meet people outside their own college.

Delhi freshers land in two waves. CUET seat rounds for DU and JNU run from July into September, so some of your batch will arrive weeks after you, and society recruitment keeps going well into the first semester. Hostel seats are scarce, which means most first-years start in PGs in Kamla Nagar, Vijay Nagar or Satya Niketan and meet as many people on their floor as in class. If you are in the Sonipat belt, the experience is the opposite: everyone lives on campus, and the challenge is getting out, not getting in.

Where freshers live, cluster by cluster

• North Campus (St. Stephen's College, Hindu College, Miranda House, Shri Ram College of Commerce, Hansraj College, Kirori Mal College, Ramjas College, Delhi School of Economics): PGs in Kamla Nagar, Vijay Nagar, Hudson Lane and GTB Nagar, walkable or one metro stop from class.
• South Campus and South Delhi (Sri Venkateswara College, Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College, Jesus and Mary College Delhi, Lady Shri Ram College, Gargi College, Jesus and Mary College): PGs in Satya Niketan, Ber Sarai, Lajpat Nagar and Kalkaji. Many students rely on the Pink and Magenta Lines.
• Hauz Khas and the institutes (IIT Delhi, JNU, NIFT Delhi, IIIT-Delhi, IIMC Delhi): Most IIT Delhi and JNU students live on campus. Others find rooms in Ber Sarai, Katwaria Sarai and Munirka.
• Jamia and Okhla (Jamia Millia Islamia): Flats and PGs in Jamia Nagar and Okhla, close to the Magenta Line.
• Gurugram and Greater Noida (MDI Gurgaon, Master's Union, Amity University Noida, Bennett University, Shiv Nadar University, Galgotias University, Sharda University): Mostly on-campus hostels. The Greater Noida campuses are self-contained townships.
• The Sonipat belt (Ashoka University, OP Jindal Global University, Rishihood University): On-campus hostels. Shuttles and cabs to Jahangirpuri metro or Kashmere Gate are how you get into the city.

The areas worth learning early

• North Campus: Delhi University's dense ring of century-old colleges circling Vishwavidyalaya metro station, with Kamla Nagar market next door for everyday student life.
• Satya Niketan (South Campus): The cafe-and-cheap-food strip just outside DU's South Campus colleges like Venkateswara and ARSD, packed every evening after lectures.
• Hauz Khas: Boutique cafes and rooftop bars cluster around the 13th-century Hauz Khas Fort and deer park, with NIFT Delhi's campus a short walk away.
• Connaught Place: Delhi's colonial-era circular commercial core, still a default meeting point with bookstores, budget eateries, and cinemas.
• Cyber Hub / DLF Cyber City, Gurugram: Gurugram's corporate towers and adjoining dining-and-nightlife strip anchor the region's startup and consulting crowd.

Getting around before you know the city

The Delhi Metro's Yellow Line runs straight through the student belt, Vishwavidyalaya station serves North Campus directly, and the same line continues south to Gurugram's Millennium City Centre (formerly HUDA City Centre), so a North Campus-to-Gurgaon trip is possible on one metro line.

Commute and PG reality in Delhi NCR

The Yellow Line is the student spine: Vishwavidyalaya station serves North Campus, and the same line runs south through Hauz Khas to Gurugram. The Pink Line reaches South Campus and Lajpat Nagar, and the Magenta Line covers Hauz Khas, Kalkaji and Jamia. Get a metro card on day one. PG rents near North Campus and Satya Niketan run high for small rooms, so visit before paying and check curfew and food rules. Winter smog from November is real, so plan indoor hangouts and keep a mask handy.

Your first-month checklist for Delhi NCR

1. Get a metro card and learn your line on day one.
2. Go to every society orientation in your first two weeks, then commit to two.
3. Do the Kamla Nagar or Satya Niketan food run with your batch.
4. Visit a PG in person, meet the owner, and get curfew, deposit and notice period in writing.
5. Save your college's helpline and share live location when you are out late.
6. Mark Rendezvous and the February fest season on your calendar now.
7. At a Sonipat campus, learn the shuttle and bus timings into Delhi before your first weekend out.
