ARSD is a 12.31-acre South Campus college in Dhaula Kuan, ranked 7th among Indian colleges in NIRF 2025, with a theatre society, Rangayan, that gave Bollywood Rajkummar Rao. Freshers' social lives are set in the first weeks by society auditions.

Area:Dhaula Kuan, South Campus, Delhi University
Founded:1959
Size:mid-size, multi-department
Affiliation:University of Delhi
Campus:12.31 acres, Dhaula Kuan, South Campus
Known as:ARSD

ARSD fields two NCC Army Wing platoons that regularly send cadets to the Republic Day parade, and its TIDE fest, running since the early 1990s, shares the yearly calendar with the Rangsheersh Jaidev Natyotsav theatre festival staged at Sri Ram Centre.

The story of Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College

ARSD traces its roots to the Sanatan Dharma Sabha, founded in Rawalpindi in 1882, which ran schools and colleges across pre-Partition Punjab. After Partition, its successors rebuilt in Delhi. Permission came on 12 July 1959, and the college was inaugurated on 3 August 1959 at a temporary campus in Anand Parbat, with Lok Sabha Speaker M.A. Ayyangar and Vice Chancellor V.K.R.V. Rao among those presiding.

The 12.31-acre site at Dhaula Kuan was bought for Rs 87,000, and Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant laid the foundation stone on 6 December 1959. In a symbolic gesture, earth from the original Rawalpindi institutions was ceremonially placed on the new site. The first batch had 307 students, 34 of them women.

The college moved to Dhaula Kuan in July 1965 and was renamed Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College in May 1968, honouring Shri Atma Ram Chadha, who supported it through a financial crisis. ARSD was ranked 7th among Indian colleges in NIRF 2025.

What the campus is like socially

ARSD mixes a serious academic streak, especially in commerce, economics and the sciences, with a fiercely competitive society scene. Students say your society shapes your identity more than orientation week does, and Rangayan and Nimbus carry particular prestige.

The campus sits on the Dhaula Kuan stretch of South Campus, next to Sri Venkateswara and close to Satya Niketan, so cross-college friendships with Venky, JMC and Maitreyi students come easily. The North East Welfare Committee gives the campus one of DU's more distinctive cultural events.

Traditions every Atma Ram Sanatan Dharma College student knows

  • TIDE: ARSD's annual cultural and student union fest, with inter-college competitions and a headline evening concert.
  • Mr and Ms TIDE: The fest's talent and personality contest, taken seriously enough that results are formally recorded.
  • Rainbow Festival: An annual inter-college celebration of North East Indian culture, organised by the North East Welfare Committee, with costumes, dance, folk music and art competitions.
  • Audition season: In the first weeks of term, Rangayan, Nimbus, Saarang and others hold open auditions that decide where freshers will spend their time.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • Soil from Rawalpindi: Earth from the original Rawalpindi institutions was placed on the Dhaula Kuan site in 1959, making ARSD's foundation quite literal.
  • Rs 87,000 for 12 acres: The price paid for the Dhaula Kuan campus in 1959 is a favourite piece of trivia.
  • Rajkummar Rao's stage years: Before Bollywood, Rajkummar Rao studied History at ARSD and performed with Rangayan.
  • The Anand Parbat start: ARSD spent its first six years in a temporary campus in Anand Parbat before moving south.

Society experience is real career capital here. Rangayan and Nimbus alumni cite confidence and public speaking in interviews, and the college's alumni list includes civil servants and Army officers alongside media and entertainment names.

Rivalries and eternal debates

ARSD's closest comparison is its neighbour Sri Venkateswara, along with other South Campus colleges, and students endlessly debate ARSD or Venky for commerce and economics. The bigger argument is aspirational: ARSD's rising NIRF rank against the brand power of North Campus names like SRCC, Hindu and Hansraj. On the fest circuit, Rangayan and Nimbus track their wins against other DU societies like a running scoreboard.
