CAT Study Group in Kolkata
A good CAT study group in Kolkata is a small adda with a timetable: three to five people near the same coaching centre who argue about DILR sets as seriously as the city argues about everything else.
How people prep for this today
IMS runs three Kolkata centres: on Camac Street near the Park Street crossing, on Rash Behari Avenue in Gariahat, and in Salt Lake Sector 1. The other big institutes cluster in the same zones, which roughly map onto the city's three prep crowds: south Kolkata students from the Jadavpur and Ballygunge belt, central Kolkata office-goers, and IT professionals around Salt Lake and Sector V.
Kolkata's habit of long, argumentative conversation makes it a natural fit for mock analysis. The Indian Coffee House on College Street has hosted that kind of adda for generations, and a weekend post-mortem over coffee there or near Gariahat is a very Kolkata way to work through a SimCAT or AIMCAT.
The calendar has one local wrinkle. Durga Puja falls in October, right in the final stretch before CAT on 29 November, and the city effectively stops for it. Pods that do well plan for it in advance: schedule a lighter week, keep one sectional test going, and agree on the exact day full mocks resume.
The shared target is IIM Calcutta at Joka, and IIFT's Kolkata campus now admits through CAT as well. For a quiet read, the National Library sits on the Belvedere Estate in Alipore, a short ride from the south Kolkata PG belt.
Why finding the right peer is hard
Kolkata has a deep pool of serious aspirants but few ways to match them. Students in Jadavpur, office-goers on Park Street and engineers in Sector V rarely share a batch, and coaching groups do not sort anyone by percentile. Plenty of people end up preparing alone, or in a friend group where only one person is actually serious about the exam.
How Zyber fits
Zyber can help you find a few verified CAT aspirants in Kolkata near where you live or work and at a similar mock percentile, so a small pod can run proper mock post-mortems and stay consistent through Puja and into November. It is a peer-matching layer, not a coaching program, and it makes no claim about your percentile or calls.
Campuses where this crowd is deep
A few campuses have enough serious people prepping that finding a matched partner is realistic:
- IIM Calcutta at Joka is the city's own IIM and the shared goal that ties most Kolkata pods together.
- Jadavpur University sits in the south Kolkata belt near Gariahat, where final-years can join a coaching batch and a study pod without a long commute.
- St. Xavier's College Kolkata has a large commerce cohort in central Kolkata, close to the Park Street coaching zone.
