In Mumbai, a CAT study group is shaped by the local train: the pods that survive are people on the same line who can meet near a station after work or sit the same Sunday mock.

Coaching follows the rail map. Career Launcher alone runs seven centres, at Churchgate, Dadar East, Vile Parle West, Borivali West, Naupada in Thane, Vashi and Nerul, and the other big names spread along the same lines. Most aspirants choose a centre on their own line, Western, Central or Harbour, which also decides who ends up in their study pod.

Rent pushes most people to commute. Shared PG rooms near Vile Parle, Matunga or Andheri can run ₹10,000 to ₹20,000 a month, so plenty of aspirants live with family in Thane, Navi Mumbai or the far western suburbs. That makes the train ride the most predictable study block of the day: a VARC passage or a set of quant flashcards fits between stations, while DILR sets wait for a desk.

Mumbai aspirants rarely prepare for CAT alone. JBIMS at Churchgate takes CAT, MAH-CET and CMAT scores through Maharashtra's CAP rounds, IIM Mumbai at Powai admits through CAT, and many people add other exams on top. A pod that mixes exam targets needs a shared core of quant and DILR, then separate drills for MAH-CET's speed-heavy format.

The weekly rhythm is familiar: a proctored SimCAT or AIMCAT on the weekend, a long analysis afterwards, and a cutting chai near the station while the group argues over which DILR set should have been skipped. With CAT on 29 November, a common plan is to step up to two full mocks a week in the last couple of months.

Why finding the right peer is hard

Mumbai's problem is geometry. Two serious aspirants at the same percentile might live 40 kilometres apart on different lines, and coaching batch groups are too big and too promotional to sort people by level or location. Working professionals at BKC or Andheri East have even less slack. The result is a lot of people preparing alone on a crowded train, surrounded by others doing exactly the same thing.
