Meeting people at NALSAR University of Law

Last updated: October 2026

NALSAR is a 55-acre law school in Shamirpet, on Hyderabad's outskirts, where about 132 undergraduates are admitted each year. The distance from the city makes campus the whole social world: seven hostels, a moot court hall, a stadium and a lot of debating.

Area:Shamirpet
Founded:1998
Size:small (~55-acre campus; roughly 700-800 students across all programmes)
Affiliation:State university established by Act 34 of 1998 (Telangana legislature); recognized by UGC and the Bar Council of India
Campus:55 acres, Shamirpet, Secunderabad
Known as:NALSAR

NALSAR is one of only three founding academic partners (alongside IIIT Hyderabad and ISB) behind T-Hub, one of India's largest startup incubators, an unusual role for a law school, and NALSAR also hosts Trilateral, an annual inter-university sports meet against NLSIU Bangalore and NUJS Kolkata.

The story of NALSAR University of Law

NALSAR was established in 1998 by the National Academy for Legal Studies and Research University Act, Act No. 34 of 1998, passed by the then Andhra Pradesh legislature. The name was changed by amendment in 2005 to NALSAR University of Law.

The campus at Shamirpet is divided into five precincts, with seven hostels, a moot court hall, a stadium and an auditorium for about 500 people inaugurated in 2016. In 2013-14 NALSAR started an MBA, the first among India's National Law Universities.

NALSAR also became one of the founding academic partners of T-Hub, Hyderabad's startup incubator, alongside IIIT Hyderabad and ISB. In 2022 it introduced gender-neutral spaces in hostels and washrooms.

What the campus is like socially

Students describe Shamirpet as a village far from the city, and the isolation has become a badge of honour. Hostel corridors, the mess and the library reading room are the entire social universe, and the same small batch lives, eats and competes together for five years.

Mooting and debating carry the most social capital. NALSAR pioneered the British Parliamentary format in Indian debating through NALSAR IV, and the Moot Court Committee's selections are followed as closely as sports trials elsewhere.

Traditions every NALSAR University of Law student knows

  • NALSAR IV: The intervarsity debating championship that introduced British Parliamentary debating to India.
  • Interrobang: NALSAR's own quiz fest.
  • Trilateral: An annual inter-university sports meet against NLSIU Bangalore and NUJS Kolkata.
  • Moot season: Internal selections and hosted moots fill the calendar, and memorial-drafting nights are a shared rite.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • In the middle of nowhere: The most repeated description of the campus, said with equal parts complaint and pride.
  • Mooting Premier League: NALSAR was judged the best mooting school in India for the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
  • The T-Hub link: A law school among the founding partners of one of India's largest startup incubators is a fact NALSAR students like to drop.
