IIM Ahmedabad vs IIM Bangalore

The rivalry in one line

IIM Ahmedabad is the system's most mythologized campus, all exposed brick and case-method intensity. IIM Bangalore is the green, startup-adjacent campus in India's tech capital. Both sit at the top of every aspirant's list, and both have alumni who will tell you why theirs was the right call.

Origins and architecture

IIM Ahmedabad opened in 1961, one of the first two IIMs, with support from the Ford Foundation and Harvard Business School. Its older campus, designed by Louis Kahn, is a landmark of brick arches and circles, and graduation is held at the Louis Kahn Plaza.

IIM Bangalore followed in 1973 as the third IIM. Its campus on Bannerghatta Road was designed by B.V. Doshi, who later won the Pritzker Prize, and is known for long stone corridors, courtyards and dense greenery. Doshi had worked with Kahn on the Ahmedabad campus, so the two rivals share an architectural family tree.

Fests and traditions compared

IIM Ahmedabad's Chaos is its annual cultural fest, held in January, and Confluence is its business fest. Campus rituals include dorm life, dunking water fights between dorms, birthday bumps and a formal dinner before placements. First-years are fachchas, and the campus lingo is thick enough to need a dictionary.

IIM Bangalore's Unmaad is its cultural fest, held in early spring, and Yamini is an all-night Indian classical music and dance concert, a rare tradition for a business school. The exchange program, which sends a large share of each batch abroad for a term, is a much-discussed part of the second year.

City and culture

Ahmedabad is a calmer city, and IIMA life is intensely on-campus. Navratri garba, old-city food walks and the nearby design and architecture schools add color.

Bangalore puts tech, startups and venture capital on IIMB's doorstep, and its entrepreneurship ecosystem, through NSRCEL, is a big part of campus identity. The city's cafes, breweries and weekend trips shape social life.

The stereotypes, lovingly

IIMA students are teased for their workload, for treating the case method as a way of life and for an inside vocabulary so dense that their own students have published a dictionary of it. IIMB students are teased for treating their campus greenery as a perk on par with placements, and for planning their exchange term before they unpack.

Each campus has its own counterpunch. Ahmedabad points to its Kahn campus and a reputation built over six decades. Bangalore points to the Doshi campus, its startup ecosystem and a city that never runs out of things to do.

In practice, students from both campuses meet constantly at case competitions, business fests and summer internships, and many friendships cross the divide.

Finding your people at either

At both IIMs, your section, study group and first club or committee decide most of your social life. Commit to one or two things in the first month, and use summer internships to meet people from the other campus.

Where the rivalry actually plays out

Mostly in CAT forums and in the business fest circuit, where Confluence, Unmaad and the B-school summits compete for speakers and participants. Case competitions put both batches in the same rooms all year.

The honest decision is about fit. If you want the classic, intense, case-heavy experience, IIMA is the archetype. If you want a greener campus in a startup city with a big exchange culture, IIMB fits. Both open the same doors.
