Campus rivalries

IIT Bombay vs IIT Delhi

IIT Bombay vs IIT Delhi is the most argued-about pair in Indian engineering. Skip the rankings fight: the real differences are the campus, the city, the fests and the feel of daily life.

Last updated: October 2026

The rivalry in one line

IIT Bombay is a lakeside campus in Powai with a self-contained, slightly insular culture. IIT Delhi is an urban campus in Hauz Khas with the capital on its doorstep. Every JoSAA season, top rankers and their families weigh the two, and the alumni of each have opinions.

Origins

IIT Bombay opened in 1958 as India's second IIT, with support from the Soviet Union through UNESCO. IIT Delhi began in 1961 as a College of Engineering with British support and became an IIT soon after. Both grew into flagship campuses of the system within a decade.

Campus and city

IIT Bombay's campus sits between Powai Lake and Vihar Lake, next to Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is big, green and self-contained, and leopard sightings are part of campus lore. Mumbai is there when you want it, but a lot of life happens inside the gates.

IIT Delhi sits in Hauz Khas in south Delhi, next to the Hauz Khas complex, close to JNU and a short ride from Hauz Khas Village, Green Park and the metro. The city is very much part of student life, from internships to weekend plans.

Fests compared

IIT Bombay has two December giants: Mood Indigo, its cultural fest, running since the early 1970s, and Techfest, its science and technology festival. Both draw huge crowds from across Mumbai and the country, and Mood Indigo regularly claims to be Asia's largest college cultural fest.

IIT Delhi has Rendezvous, its cultural fest, held in late September or early October and running since 1976, with pronites that draw big names. Its technical fest, Tryst, runs separately. Delhi University crowds turn up at Rendezvous in large numbers, which gives it a citywide feel.

Hostels and daily life

At both campuses, your hostel is your tribe. IIT Bombay's hostels are mostly numbered, and the inter-hostel General Championship is fiercely contested across culture, sports and tech. IIT Delhi names its hostels after Indian mountain ranges, like Kumaon, Nilgiri, Aravali and Karakoram, and hostel rivalries run just as deep.

Both have dense club ecosystems, from robotics and coding to dramatics and music, plus entrepreneurship cells that have produced many founders. The Inter-IIT Sports Meet is where this pair meets on a scoreboard, and results get relitigated by both sides every year.

The stereotypes, lovingly

IIT Bombay students get teased for never leaving campus, treating Powai as the edge of the known world and talking about Mood Indigo all year. IIT Delhi students get teased for treating the institute as a south Delhi neighborhood, spending weekends in Hauz Khas Village and claiming the whole city as an extension of campus.

Each side has a favorite counterpunch. Bombay points to its lakes, its December fests and the size of its campus. Delhi points to the capital's internships, policy networks, and the crowds that turn up for Rendezvous.

Underneath the banter, students on both campuses know they share far more than divides them: the same JEE grind, the same hostel-first social life and the same inter-IIT camaraderie.

Finding your people at either

At both campuses, your hostel wing is your first circle and your first club is your second. Join a fest team in your first semester, since Mood Indigo, Techfest, Rendezvous and Tryst all run on hundreds of student volunteers.

So which one?

Pick on fit. If you want a big, green, self-contained campus and Mumbai's energy on weekends, Bombay suits you. If you want a city campus with Delhi's internships, policy circles and food on your doorstep, Delhi suits you. Both will give you an excellent peer group and a lifelong network.
