Campus rivalries
SRCC vs SSCBS
SRCC vs SSCBS is the debate every DU commerce and management aspirant has at least once. One is a century-old North Campus institution, the other a newer business school with a startup streak. Both have fiercely loyal students.
The rivalry in one line
Shri Ram College of Commerce sells heritage, B.Com and Economics, and a famous placement cell. Shaheed Sukhdev College of Business Studies sells management education from day one, a modern vertical campus and an entrepreneurial culture. Forums have argued about them for years without a winner.
Two very different origin stories
SRCC began in 1920 as the Commercial School in Old Delhi, joined the University of Delhi in 1926, took its current name in 1951 and moved to North Campus in 1954. Its founder, industrialist Sir Shri Ram, also founded Lady Shri Ram College.
SSCBS was set up in 1987 by the Ministry of Human Resource Development as India's first collegiate business school offering undergraduate management education. It is named after the revolutionary Sukhdev Thapar. In 2017 it moved from Vivek Vihar to a multi-storey campus in Sector 16, Rohini.
Courses and classrooms
SRCC's flagship programs are B.Com (Hons) and BA (Hons) Economics, and its classrooms carry a strong economics and finance flavor.
SSCBS offers BMS, a BBA in Financial Investment Analysis and a B.Sc (Hons) in Computer Science. Teaching leans on case studies, presentations and live projects, and the mix of management and computer science students gives the campus a product and tech tilt.
Fests and societies compared
SRCC's Crossroads is one of DU's biggest cultural fests, with competitions and pro-nights, and its Business Conclave brings policymakers and business leaders to campus. The debating society runs a well-known circuit of its own.
SSCBS runs Crescendo, its annual fest, alongside Convergence, a leadership and business summit, and a lively theatre and street-play culture. Its Enactus team has a strong record in social enterprise competitions.
Society selection is famously intense at both. Many SSCBS societies use CV rounds, group discussions and interviews that feel like a corporate hiring process, and SRCC's finance, consulting and debating societies are just as competitive.
Where the rivalry actually plays out
Mostly online and in case competitions. Every admission season brings new threads comparing placements, cutoffs and culture, and students from both colleges meet constantly in national case competitions, quizzes and business fests.
Geography matters too. SRCC sits in the walkable North Campus cluster, so students mix with other colleges daily. SSCBS is in Rohini, a metro ride away, which makes its own campus community tighter.
The fair version of the debate is about fit, not rank. If you want B.Com or Economics in the heart of North Campus, SRCC is the natural pick. If you want management or computer science with a startup flavor, SSCBS makes more sense.
The stereotypes, lovingly
Ask around DU and you will hear that SRCC students already speak fluent finance in first year and treat every canteen chat as a networking opportunity. SSCBS students get teased for turning every idea into a startup pitch deck and every society into a mini company with its own HR process.
Both stereotypes contain a grain of truth and a lot of exaggeration. SRCC has strong dramatics, music and debating cultures that have nothing to do with finance, and plenty of SSCBS students are there for computer science, theatre or photography rather than pitch decks.
Finding your people at either
At both colleges, your society is your social circle. Apply widely in the first weeks, even if the process feels intimidating, and do not take one rejection personally. Inter-college case competitions are also one of the best ways to meet people from the other side of this rivalry.
