St. Stephen's vs Hindu

St. Stephen's and Hindu College are the oldest rivalry in Delhi University: two founding colleges a road apart, with very different traditions and equally loyal students. Neither side has ever conceded anything.

The rivalry in one line

Stephen's is the red-brick college of chapel, Founder's Day and an admissions interview. Hindu is the red-brick college of a Students' Parliament, election rallies and one of DU's loudest fests. Put them on the same stretch of North Campus for a century and a rivalry was inevitable.

Shared roots

St. Stephen's was founded on 1 February 1881 by the Cambridge Mission to Delhi, which makes it the oldest college in the city. Hindu College followed in 1899, set up by local founders who wanted a non-elitist, nationalist alternative for Delhi's students.

When the University of Delhi was created in 1922, Stephen's, Hindu and Ramjas were its first three colleges. Both moved into North Campus and ended up as neighbors near the Vishwavidyalaya metro station. Students have been comparing notes, and trading jokes, across that road ever since.

Traditions compared

Stephen's runs on ritual. There is a morning assembly, a college chapel, Founder's Day around 1 February, and a residential culture where seniors and juniors know each other by name. As a Christian minority institution, it runs its own admissions interview alongside CUET scores, which is a constant topic of debate in DU.

Hindu's signature is self-government. Its Students' Parliament, running since 1935, elects a Prime Minister and a Leader of the Opposition every year, with a full student cabinet. Odd semesters feel like an election season, complete with posters, speeches and celebrations outside the hostel when results come in.

Stephanians tend to describe their college as disciplined and close-knit. Hinduites tend to describe theirs as open, political and noisy. Both descriptions are said with pride, and both get used as insults by the other side.

Fests compared

Hindu College's Mecca is one of DU's best-known fests, a multi-day spring event with competitions by day and a star night to close. Hindu also runs a string of society fests across the even semester, from poetry to economics to music.

Stephen's leans more on society-led events than on one giant pro-night fest. Its dramatics, debating, quizzing and music societies run their own competitions and productions, and students show up for each other's events across the year. Plenty of Stephanians are spotted at Mecca, and plenty of Hinduites turn up at Stephen's society events. The rivalry is loud, but the audience overlaps.

Where the rivalry actually plays out

Sports grounds are the most literal venue. Football, cricket and basketball fixtures between the two draw crowds, and results get retold for years.

Debating and quizzing are the other arena. Both colleges have strong societies that meet constantly on the DU circuit, often in the final rounds. And every admission season, applicants choosing between Economics or History at either college restart the online debate about which campus is the better fit.

The honest answer is that they suit different people. If you want a smaller, ritual-heavy college with a residential core, Stephen's will feel like home. If you want a louder, more political campus with a big fest culture, Hindu will.

Finding your people at either

At both colleges, societies decide your social life. Audition early, pick one or two, and keep showing up. Because the campuses are so close, it is easy to make friends across the road too, especially through inter-college debates, quizzes and fests.
