College Fest Circuit Guide
Mood Indigo, Saarang, Kshitij, Antaragni, these names get thrown around in every college WhatsApp group by September, but nobody explains what actually happens or whether it is worth the trip.
India's college fest circuit is a calendar of large annual cultural and technical festivals, mostly run by IITs, NITs, and top private and DU colleges, that combine competitions (dance, music, quiz, case, coding), celebrity concerts, and pro-shows, and draw thousands of students from other campuses. As a fresher, pick one or two fests genuinely near you or matching an interest you already have, register early since the popular events fill up fast, and budget realistically for travel and stay since these are rarely subsidised beyond your own college's contingent, if it sends one.
Step by step
1. Know the shape of the circuit
The big technical fests, Techkriti and Antaragni at IIT Kanpur, Kshitij at IIT Kharagpur, Cognizance at IIT Roorkee, Shaastra at IIT Madras, run coding, robotics, and case-style events alongside talks and workshops. The big cultural fests, Mood Indigo at IIT Bombay, Saarang at IIT Madras, Spring Fest at IIT Kharagpur, Rendezvous at IIT Delhi, Waves at BITS Pilani, mix dance, music, drama, and quiz competitions with celebrity concerts and DJ nights. 2. Decide why you are going before you pick a fest
Going purely for the pro-show and the general atmosphere is a completely valid reason and does not require registering for anything. Going to compete in a specific event, a dance battle, a quiz, a case round, a coding contest, needs you to register for that event specifically and usually to prepare in advance with your team. Be honest about which one you actually want, since the prep and the budget differ a lot.
3. Register early for anything popular
Flagship events at the bigger fests fill up fast, sometimes within days of registration opening, especially the marquee competitions and the popular workshops. Fest registration usually opens through the fest's own website or Unstop weeks in advance. If there is a specific competition or workshop you want, put a reminder for the registration opening date rather than checking back casually.
4. Budget for travel and stay honestly
Unless your college sends an official contingent (which some do for teams competing in specific events, with partial travel or stay support), most fest attendance is entirely self-funded: train or bus tickets, three to four nights of stay (often in a nearby budget hotel, hostel dorm, or a friend's college accommodation), fest entry passes, and food. A realistic fest trip for one person, travel plus stay plus passes plus food, commonly runs a few thousand rupees even with basic choices, so plan it as a real trip, not a spontaneous one.
5. Travel and stay in a group where you can
Splitting a hotel room or hostel dorm bed, travelling together on the same train or bus, and pooling local transport costs meaningfully cuts the per-person cost. It is also simply safer and more fun to navigate an unfamiliar campus with three or four people than alone, especially for late-night events that run past midnight.
6. Use the fest to meet people beyond your own college
Fests are one of the few settings where thousands of students from completely different colleges are in one place for a few days with a shared reason to talk. Workshops, waiting lines for events, and the common ground of your own college's contingent are natural places to strike up conversations. Many genuine cross-college friendships and even some internship or project connections start at a fest, informally, over these few days.
