What first year in Pune actually looks like

First year in Pune moves fast. Admissions through MHT-CET and JEE counselling run into July, and most colleges start by late July or early August, so freshers land together and friend groups form in the first fortnight. The intake is mixed: a big Maharashtra cohort from Vidarbha, Marathwada and the Konkan, a large out-of-state crowd, and one of India's biggest international student groups at Symbiosis. The areas worth learning early
- Koregaon Park: Leafy old-money neighborhood laid out in the 1920s on land auctioned to merchants and princely families, now home to the Osho International Meditation Resort and the Lane 6/Lane 7 strip of bars and restaurants that anchors much of the city's nightlife.
- Viman Nagar: A newer residential-commercial pocket next to Pune airport, built up around the Phoenix Marketcity mall and home to Symbiosis Law School's campus.
- Kothrud: A dense, fast-grown residential suburb along Karve Road that houses MIT-WPU and several engineering colleges alongside offices for Cognizant, Persistent Systems and Tech Mahindra.
- Deccan: Short for Deccan Gymkhana, named after the sports club there; this is Pune's original college quarter, ringing Fergusson College, Gokhale Institute and ILS Law College within a couple of kilometres of each other.
- Hinjewadi: Site of the 2,800-acre Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, where 800-plus companies including Infosys, Wipro, TCS and Cognizant draw an estimated 240,000+ daily commuters, a professional population almost entirely separate from the student neighborhoods.
Getting around before you know the city
Pune Metro's Purple Line (PCMC-Swargate) and Aqua Line (Vanaz-Ramwadi) have run since March 2022, with the Aqua Line passing through Deccan Gymkhana near the FC Road college cluster and the Purple Line through Shivajinagar; a Pink Line extension linking Hinjewadi's IT park to Shivajinagar began operations in 2026. Outside the metro corridors, PMPML buses and autorickshaws remain the default for most student and commuter trips.
Commute and PG reality in Pune
Pune Metro's Aqua Line passes through Deccan Gymkhana near the FC Road colleges and the Purple Line runs through Shivajinagar, so the old college quarter is now metro-friendly. Beyond the metro, PMPML buses and autos do most of the work, and a two-wheeler becomes the default by second year. Hinjewadi traffic is a running city joke, so if an internship takes you west, budget real time for it. PGs in Kothrud and Deccan cost less than Viman Nagar or Koregaon Park, and mess-inclusive PGs are common near the older colleges.
