Meeting people at IISER Pune
IISER Pune is a small, fully residential science institute on a 98-acre campus in Pashan, where most undergraduates are on a five-year BS-MS and a research thesis, not a placement offer, is the big milestone. Social life is tight-knit because everyone lives, eats and studies on the same hill.
During Karavaan 2014, more than 300 IISER Pune students created a 2,500-square-metre Warli painting on the campus football field in under 12 hours, a feat recorded in the Limca Book of Records and unmatched by any other Pune fest on this list.
The story of IISER Pune
IISER Pune was set up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2006, with a mission to be a science university that integrates teaching and research from the undergraduate level up. Chemist K. N. Ganesh, who had headed the organic chemistry division at Pune's National Chemical Laboratory, was chosen as its first director and led the institute until 2017.
In 2012 an Act of Parliament declared IISER Pune an Institute of National Importance. The institute settled on its permanent campus on Dr. Homi Bhabha Road in Pashan, and by 2025 it had grown to about 2,055 students, including roughly 1,079 undergraduates and over 700 PhD scholars.
Admissions changed in 2024, when the BS-MS programme moved exclusively to the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT). JEE Advanced and KVPY routes are no longer accepted, so the current undergraduate batches are the first admitted purely through IAT.
What the campus is like socially
IISER Pune feels like a small town of scientists in training. Batches are small enough that you know most of your year, and the BS-MS starts with a common core across biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and earth sciences, so friendships form across subjects before people specialise. Late-night canteen runs before deadlines and early-morning sports slots bookend the day.
The culture prizes curiosity over polish. Students run outreach, quizzes and science communication events alongside music, theatre and sport, and the big social moments are Karavaan in the autumn and the Inter IISER Sports Meet, where IISER Pune travels to compete against its sister institutes.
Traditions every IISERite knows
- Karavaan: The annual three-day fest, held in late October or early November, started in 2008 as a small intra-college event. Its name means caravan, a nod to all IISERs moving forward together.
- Science Stand-up Comedy: A Karavaan event where contestants build comedy sets around scientific ideas, alongside Minimalistic Pedagogy, a contest for explaining hard concepts simply.
- Pronite: Karavaan's headline night has hosted Indian Ocean, The Local Train, Lagori, Agam and comedians such as Anirban Dasgupta and Karunesh Talwar.
- Inter IISER Sports Meet: Held since 2012, the meet brings about 1,500 athletes from ten institutes together each year. IISER Pune won in 2013 and 2016 and hosted again in 2024.
- Blah Fest: A Karavaan favourite where teams invent the most preposterous scientific explanation they can defend with a straight face.
Campus lore and insider spots
- The Warli painting record: On 2 November 2014, over 300 students created a 2,500 square metre Warli painting on the football field in under 12 hours, earning a Limca Book of Records mention.
- You had the rank, why IISER?: Almost every student has been asked why they picked pure science over an engineering seat. Answering it becomes a rite of passage.
- Small batch, big hill: With a fully residential campus and small batches, gossip travels from lab to hostel faster than any group chat.
How to find your people here
At IISER Pune, joining a lab group, research project, or academic club early is the fastest way to build a real circle.

Societies worth knowing at IISER Pune
- Mimamsa: IISER Pune's national science-reasoning competition, first held in 2009 and credited to Sutirth Dey and a group of students. Rounds like Deep Thought reward critical inquiry over trivia, and IISc Bangalore has won it seven times.
- Karavaan organising team: The fest core doubles as the campus's main event-management crew and runs drives and campus events through the year.
- SPIC MACAY chapter: Brings Indian classical music and dance performances to campus.
- Student clubs: Clubs for astronomy, coding, robotics, photography, writing, music and sport give students a life beyond the lab, with low entry barriers for freshers.
Careers, internships and placements
IISER Pune is built for research careers. The fifth year of the BS-MS is a full research thesis with a faculty mentor, so most graduates leave with real lab experience before applying to PhD programmes in India and abroad. Higher studies, not campus jobs, is the most common next step.
Students who prefer industry move into corporate R&D, data science, consulting, science communication and education. NIRF 2025 placed the institute 55th overall and 35th in the research category, which reflects how much of its identity sits in the lab.
Rivalries and eternal debates
The rivalry is a family affair. All IISERs, plus institutes like NISER, meet at the Inter IISER Sports Meet, and IISER Bhopal has won six titles in a row since 2018, which makes them the team to beat. Off the field, IISER Pune versus NISER is the eternal admissions-season comparison, and the IISER versus IIT question follows every student home for the holidays.
What IISER Pune is talking about now
The first IAT-only batches are now on campus, and the 2024 Sports Meet on home ground, where Pune finished runner-up, gave the student body a big shared moment. Research internships and summer programmes remain the main currency students trade in.
Meeting people at IISER Pune by interest
A lot of friendships here form around a shared interest rather than a class or a hostel wing.
