Meeting people at AIIMS Jodhpur
AIIMS Jodhpur is the 2012 AIIMS on a 180-acre campus in Jodhpur's Basni area, known among students for its flipped UNCLE classes, its joint MedTech programme with IIT Jodhpur and, in 2026, an MBBS graduate who topped the UPSC Civil Services Examination.
AIIMS Jodhpur runs a joint MedTech programme with IIT Jodhpur, billed as the first in India where doctors and engineers study medical technology side by side, and its MBBS graduate Dr Anuj Agnihotri topped the UPSC Civil Services Examination with AIR 1.
The story of AIIMS Jodhpur
Finance Minister Jaswant Singh laid AIIMS Jodhpur's foundation stone on 31 January 2004, with Health Minister Sushma Swaraj and Agriculture Minister Rajnath Singh present. It was one of the six new AIIMS planned under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana, and it became operational as a statutory AIIMS on 17 September 2012.
Outpatient services began on 27 July 2013, and from 2013 the institute has admitted 100 MBBS and 60 BSc Nursing (Hons) students a year. Postgraduate courses began in 2017 in 20 departments, growing to 194 seats a year. By December 2021 surgeons had performed more than 500 robotic surgeries.
President Ram Nath Kovind addressed the second convocation on 7 December 2019 and praised the institute's collaboration with IIT Jodhpur. NIRF ranked AIIMS Jodhpur 13th among medical colleges in 2023.
What the campus is like socially
Students joke that they study at the gate of the Thar, and the summer heat is the adjustment everyone talks about. The campus itself gets rave reviews: big, clean buildings, plenty of trees, two-seater hostel rooms, and a mess that students say tastes like mom's food.
Teaching has its own flavour. AIIMS Jodhpur runs a flipped-classroom model, and students talk about UNCLE (Unconventional Learning Experiences) sessions the way older colleges talk about practicals. Sports courts for badminton, basketball and tennis fill the evenings.
Traditions every AIIMS Jodhpur student knows
- AURA: The annual cultural fest, the biggest student-run event on campus.
- UNCLE sessions: Unconventional Learning Experiences, part of the flipped-classroom model students consider a signature of the campus.
- Convocation: A formal milestone that has drawn national leaders, including the President in 2019.
