Meeting people at AIIMS Bhubaneswar
AIIMS Bhubaneswar is the 2012 AIIMS on a 100-acre campus at Sijua, on the edge of Bhubaneswar, and NIRF has placed it among the top AIIMS outside Delhi, while its students run Chiasma, one of eastern India's biggest medical fests.
AIIMS Bhubaneswar's foundation stone was laid by PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee on 15 July 2003, but its first 50 MBBS students only began on 21 September 2012, on a 100-acre campus at Sijua.
The story of AIIMS Bhubaneswar
Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee laid the foundation stone of AIIMS Bhubaneswar on 15 July 2003, as one of six new AIIMS under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. The institute was formally established in 2012, and its first academic year began on 21 September 2012 with 50 MBBS students. The first nursing cohort of 60 joined in September 2013.
Students elected their first Students' Union on 27 February 2015, and the first convocation had Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu as chief guest. A satellite centre in Balasore, with a planned 300-bed hospital, had its foundation stone laid on 25 August 2018.
NIRF ranked AIIMS Bhubaneswar 14th among medical colleges in 2025. In December 2025, 100-year-old Berhampur gynaecologist Dr K. Lakshmi Bai donated Rs 3.4 crore of her life savings to build a women's cancer care centre at the institute.
What the campus is like socially
Student life is organised by SAAB, the Students' Association, through seven committees with names students use as everyday shorthand: THROBB for culture, FARRAGO for literary events, ALTIS for sports, SAPIENTIA for academics, LUMIERE for web and IT, AEGIS for hostel and welfare, and VEDRITI for food and mess.
Under them sit smaller clubs for ecology, photography, drama, gaming, books, music and movies. The academic side is as lively as the cultural one, with national quizzes and workshops that pull in students from other medical colleges.
Traditions every AIIMS Bhubaneswar student knows
- Chiasma: The annual inter-college fest, first held from 4 to 7 February 2016, with cultural, sports, literary, quiz and fine arts events. Past editions have featured a Sunburn Campus EDM night, Armaan Malik and comedian Azeem Banatwalla.
- WISSEN: SAPIENTIA's flagship academic workshop, billed as one of eastern India's first inter-college academic workshops.
- PANACEA: A national-level pre and para-clinical quiz run by SAPIENTIA.
- Sand art at Chiasma: Padma Shri sand artist Sudarshan Patnaik has run sessions at the fest.
- SPIC MACAY evenings: Classical music and dance programmes are part of the fest line-up.
Campus lore and insider spots
- Nine years from stone to class: The foundation stone went down in 2003 and the first MBBS batch arrived in 2012.
- Committee code names: THROBB, FARRAGO, ALTIS and VEDRITI make SAAB sound like a secret society to first-years.
- The centenarian's gift: A 100-year-old doctor's Rs 3.4 crore donation for a women's cancer centre is now part of the institute's story.
