Meeting people at AIIMS Patna
AIIMS Patna is Bihar's AIIMS, a 2012 institute on a 134-acre campus at Phulwari Sharif that has grown into one of the state's main referral hospitals, with Kaizen as the week every student waits for.
AIIMS Patna's foundation stone was laid by Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat in January 2004, its first 50 MBBS students began on 25 September 2012, and in 2020 the Bihar government made it a dedicated Covid hospital.
The story of AIIMS Patna
Vice-President Bhairon Singh Shekhawat laid the foundation stone of AIIMS Patna in January 2004, as one of the six new AIIMS planned under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. An Act of Parliament made it an Institute of National Importance, and it was formally inaugurated on 25 September 2012, the same day its first 50 MBBS students began. Intake doubled to 100 in 2013.
The first surgery was performed in the AYUSH PMR block on 26 December 2013. By 2019-20 the hospital had reached 960 operational beds and 20 high-end operating theatres, and by 2023 it had 1,331 beds and 28 modular theatres.
In 2020 the Bihar government declared AIIMS Patna a Dedicated Covid Hospital, putting students and residents at the centre of the state's pandemic response. NIRF ranked it 26th among medical colleges in 2024.
What the campus is like socially
Batch identity runs deep: students introduce themselves by admission year, and the 2012 batch are the founders. The campus is split between the 100-acre medical college and a 34-acre residential area, so the walk between hostel and hospital is part of daily life.
Student life is organised through APSA, the AIIMS Patna Students' Association, which runs Kaizen and student affairs. Freshers' night, the inter-college sports week and literary events give students a break from postings and exams.
Traditions every AIIMS Patna student knows
- Kaizen: The annual fest of music, dance, sports and academics run by APSA. Kaizen 2024 ran from 3 to 8 September, with stand-up comedian Aakash Gupta.
- Kaizen sports week: The fest grew out of an inter-college sports week. In March 2016 AIIMS Patna took the overall title against PMCH and CNLU, winning badminton.
- Freshers' Party: Each new MBBS batch is welcomed with a ramp walk and DJ night.
- Anti-Ragging Week: An annual week of awareness activities, including student street plays.
Campus lore and insider spots
- Founded twice: The foundation stone went down in 2004, but the first students only arrived in 2012.
- The Covid year: In 2020 the entire hospital became a dedicated Covid facility, a period students and residents still talk about.
- Badminton bragging rights: AIIMS Patna's badminton wins at the sports week are a point of pride against older Patna colleges.

Careers, internships and placements
After MBBS, most graduates aim for MD, MS, DM or MCh seats through INI-CET or NEET-PG, while others enter government service. Heavy patient volumes in one of Bihar's main referral hospitals give students early, intense clinical exposure.
The institute's growing super-specialty departments are adding more postgraduate and super-specialty training options on campus.
Rivalries and eternal debates
In Patna, AIIMS students meet PMCH and IGIMS on the sports field and in NEET counselling debates. Among the new AIIMS, Patna is compared with Bhubaneswar, Bhopal and Rishikesh on NIRF ranks.
