Meeting people at AIIMS Bhopal

Last updated: October 2026

AIIMS Bhopal is one of the six AIIMS announced in 2003 to take AIIMS-level care beyond Delhi, and since its first MBBS batch in 2012 it has grown into one of central India's busiest teaching hospitals, with Retina as the big annual fest.

Area:Saket Nagar, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh
Founded:2012
Size:small (125 MBBS seats a year)
Affiliation:Institute of National Importance (AIIMS Act, as amended 2012)
Campus:Saket Nagar, Bhopal
Known as:AIIMS Bhopal

AIIMS Bhopal's foundation stone was laid in 2004, but its first 100 MBBS students only arrived on 2 August 2012, and today the institute treats cancer patients among Bhopal gas tragedy survivors free of cost under a state agreement.

The story of AIIMS Bhopal

In 2003 the central government decided to set up new AIIMS at Rishikesh, Bhopal, Patna, Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar and Raipur under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojana. AIIMS Bhopal's foundation stone was laid on 20 January 2004, but it took eight more years for classes to begin.

The first department, Community and Family Medicine, opened in September 2012, and the first MBBS batch of 100 students started on 2 August 2012. Parliament's AIIMS (Amendment) Act, 2012 gave the new AIIMS the same statutory standing as the Delhi institute. MBBS intake has since grown to 125 a year.

A BSL-3 lab was set up in 2019, and in 2024 the institute launched India's first MSc in Translational Medicine. NIRF placed it 25th among medical colleges in 2025, up from 38th in 2023.

What the campus is like socially

Life follows the medical school rhythm: pre-clinical years spent between lecture halls, dissection halls and the library, then clinical postings in a hospital that is almost always full. Batches are known by their admission year, and the 2012 batch is remembered as the pioneers who started while the campus was still being built.

Everyone lives on campus in single rooms. The undergraduate girls' hostel is named after Ahilya Bai Holkar, and the postgraduate hostels after Rani Laxmibai and Swami Vivekananda. The newer research forums and journal clubs give students a regular place to present work and get grilled by seniors.

Traditions every AIIMS Bhopal student knows

  • Retina: The annual fest, a five-day run of sports, dance, music, gaming and quizzes.
  • Freshers and farewells: The Cultural Society welcomes each new MBBS batch and sends seniors off as they move into clinical life.
  • Inter-college quizzing: The quiz club represents AIIMS Bhopal at medical quiz circuits across the country.
  • Journal Club: A recurring session where students present research papers and defend them.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • The eight-year wait: The foundation stone went down in 2004 and the first students walked in only in 2012.
  • Hostel names: Hostels honour Ahilya Bai Holkar, Rani Laxmibai and Swami Vivekananda.
  • Retina, not Pulse: Visitors from other AIIMS often mix up the fest names. Pulse belongs to AIIMS Delhi.
  • A link to 1984: Under an agreement with the state's gas relief department, AIIMS Bhopal offers free cancer treatment to Bhopal gas tragedy survivors.

Among the newer AIIMS, Bhopal is compared most often with Jodhpur, Bhubaneswar and Rishikesh on NIRF ranks and NEET cutoffs. Its recent rise in the rankings has given students something to point to.
