Meeting people at HNLU
HNLU sits on a 65-acre campus beside a lake at Uparwara, Nava Raipur, about 22 km from Raipur city. It is named after Mohammad Hidayatullah, the only person to have served as Chief Justice of India, President and Vice-President of India.
HNLU's circular academic building in Nava Raipur was designed to echo the architecture of the Parliament of India, and its Colossus sports fest has run annually since 2013, distinguishing its campus geography and calendar from other Raipur institutions.
The story of HNLU
Hidayatullah National Law University was established in 2003 under Act No. 10 of 2003, two years after Chhattisgarh became a state. In 2009 it moved to its current campus in Nava Raipur, the state's new planned capital.
Its namesake, Mohammad Hidayatullah, was Chief Justice of India from 1968 to 1970, acting President in 1969 and Vice-President from 1979 to 1984. The Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court serves as the university's Chancellor.
What the campus is like socially
The campus is remote and residential, with a lake on one side and a growing planned city on the other, so student life turns inward. The Student Bar Association, with fourteen committees, runs much of it.
Colossus, the sports fest, brings visiting teams each year, and the Justice Hidayatullah Memorial National Moot in March is the academic high point.
Traditions every HNLU student knows
- Colossus: HNLU's flagship sports fest, started in 2013, with around 15 sports events and an equal number of cultural events.
- Justice Hidayatullah Memorial National Moot Court Competition: HNLU's annual moot, held in March.
Campus lore and insider spots
- Three offices: The university's namesake is the only person to have served as Chief Justice, President and Vice-President of India.
- Frontier campus: HNLU moved to Nava Raipur in 2009, while the new capital was still being built around it.
How to find your people here

A lot of friendships here form around a shared interest rather than a class or a hostel wing. If you are into debating and mun, reading and book clubs, quizzing, running, and food and cafe hopping, those pages cover where that scene actually happens in India and how to find people near you who are into the same thing.
