Gujarat National Law University was founded under the Gujarat National Law University Act, 2003, with Solicitor General Kirit Raval, then Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the Bar Council of India behind its establishment. V.S. Mani was the first Director, followed by Bimal N. Patel.
The university moved to its 50-acre campus in the Knowledge Corridor in 2012. A 2022 amendment to its Act created a second campus in Silvassa, supported by the administration of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.
