Lady Irwin College is a DU women's college on a 16.5-acre campus on Sikandra Road, steps from Mandi House, best known for home science, food technology and nutrition. Its location in Delhi's theatre district and its Quintessence fest give it a social life unlike any other DU campus.

The story of Lady Irwin College

The All India Women's Conference began raising funds for the college in 1928, and Lady Irwin College opened in 1932 under the patronage of Lady Dorothy Irwin, wife of the Viceroy, with supporters including Sarojini Naidu and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur. Educator Hannah Sen founded and directed the college until 1947.

The college moved to its present campus on Sikandra Road in 1938. In 1950, after management passed from the AIWC's education fund association, it became affiliated with the University of Delhi. Its motto is 'Vidya Hi Seva', education is service.

Today the college offers B.Sc. Home Science, B.Sc. Food Technology, B.Ed., M.Sc. Home Science in five specialisations, a PhD programme and a postgraduate diploma in dietetics. It was ranked 23rd among Indian colleges by NIRF in 2024.

What the campus is like socially

Lady Irwin is small, focused and hands-on. Most students study home science or food technology, so lab work, fieldwork and projects with real communities are a big part of the week. Students push back hard on outsiders who dismiss home science, pointing to nutrition, textile science and child development research.

The location is the secret weapon. Mandi House, Bengali Market, Kamani Auditorium and the National School of Drama are all minutes away, so plays, street food and cultural events are part of everyday student life. Actor Chitrangada Singh has said those Bengali Market and NSD outings are among her fondest Delhi memories.

Fabric and apparel students move into fashion, textiles and conservation.
