UPSC holds the NDA exam twice a year, in April and September. NDA 2 2026 was held on September 13, 2026, and the next cycle opens with NDA 1 2027. The written exam has a mathematics paper of 300 marks and a general ability test of 600 marks, two and a half hours each, with a third of a mark deducted for wrong answers. Candidates who clear it face the SSB interview, worth another 900 marks, followed by a medical.
Eligibility runs from roughly sixteen and a half to nineteen and a half years, unmarried, and Class 12 students can apply while awaiting results. That is why so much NDA prep runs alongside board exams, through school-plus-coaching schedules and defence academies in cities like Dehradun, along with YouTube channels and Telegram groups for GAT current affairs and SSB tips.
A study group here is usually a classmate or two from the same school or defence coaching batch. They do maths practice sets together, quiz each other on GAT topics, and later practise the group discussions, lecturettes and picture stories that the SSB tests. The shorthand is distinct: GAT, SSB, screening, PPDT, TAT, WAT, conference out, recommended.

The SSB tests how you work in a group, but most written prep is done alone.
