Internship Scams: How to Spot Them
Fake internship offers follow a small number of repeating patterns in India, and once you know them, most of the scams targeting students become obvious within a minute of reading the message.
Any internship that asks you to pay before you start work, whether framed as a registration fee, training kit charge, or refundable deposit, is almost always a scam; a genuine employer never charges you to work for them. Be equally cautious of offers that arrive entirely over WhatsApp or Telegram with no company email trail, and never share an OTP, UPI PIN, or bank login as part of any hiring process. Step by step
1. Never pay to start an internship
Registration fees, 'training kit' charges, refundable security deposits, or certificate fees are the single most common Indian internship scam pattern. A real employer or genuine internship program never asks the candidate to pay money to begin working; treat any such request as a hard stop.
2. Be suspicious of offers that arrive entirely over WhatsApp or Telegram
Legitimate recruiters use official company email domains and run a real, if brief, interview process. A role offered purely through a random WhatsApp group forward or a Telegram bot message, with no company email at any stage, should be treated as high-risk by default, even if the message looks professionally written.
3. Recognise task-based scams disguised as internships
Schemes asking you to 'complete simple daily tasks', such as liking videos, rating products, or forwarding messages, in exchange for a growing account balance you can only withdraw after paying an 'unlock fee', are investment-scam patterns wearing an internship label, not real work. The fee demand at the end is the tell.
4. Check the company before you accept anything
A quick search for the company's actual website, a LinkedIn page with real, identifiable employees, and reviews on Glassdoor or AmbitionBox takes about five minutes and catches most fakes. A company with no verifiable online presence beyond the one internship posting you found is a serious red flag.
5. Never share OTPs, bank logins, or make any payment
No genuine internship process requires your net banking OTP, UPI PIN, or any payment of any kind, at any stage, ever, no matter how professionally formatted the offer letter looks. Anyone asking for this information is trying to access your money, not hire you.
6. Report it, do not just ignore it
File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in or call the National Cyber Crime helpline at 1930 if you have been scammed or asked for payment as part of a fake internship. Also report the fake listing to the platform it appeared on, whether that is Internshala, LinkedIn, or Unstop, so other students do not fall for the exact same posting.
