XLRI, established in 1949, is the oldest business school in India, predating the first IIMs, and its multi-day fest Ensemble-Valhalla is held on its Jamshedpur campus.

The story of XLRI - Xavier School of Management

XLRI was set up in 1949 by Jesuit priest Fr. Quinn Enright, with support from Tata Steel officials. It began as the Xavier Labour Relations Institute, created to train people for the industrial and labour relations challenges of a steel town and a newly independent country.

That labour relations root explains XLRI's lasting strength in human resources. Over the decades it grew into a full business school, renamed itself the Xavier School of Management while keeping the XLRI name, and built two flagship programmes: the postgraduate diplomas in Business Management and Human Resource Management.

In 2020 XLRI opened a second campus at Jhajjar in Delhi-NCR. It now holds AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS accreditation, ranked 10th among management schools in NIRF 2025, and counts more than 30,000 alumni.

What the campus is like socially

Jamshedpur shapes XLRI life. It is a quieter, greener city than the metros, so the campus becomes the centre of everything: classes, committee work, sport and late-night case prep all happen within a few minutes' walk. Hostels and residences carry the names of Jesuit leaders, a reminder of the institute's roots.

The two-year programmes are intense, and committees and clubs fill whatever time classes leave. The Jesuit ethos shows up in a strong emphasis on ethics and social responsibility alongside the push for placements.
