Meeting people at VIT Vellore

Last updated: October 2026

VIT Vellore is a 372-acre campus city in Katpadi where you build your own timetable under FFCS, pick your faculty and slots, and spend February waiting for Riviera, one of South India's biggest college fests.

Area:Katpadi, Vellore
Founded:1984
Size:very large (about 51,700 students across Vellore and Chennai campuses)
Affiliation:Deemed University (private)
Campus:372 acres, Katpadi, Vellore
Known as:VIT

VIT Vellore's Riviera festival drew over 45,000 attendees from 80 institutions across 26 countries in its 2025 edition and holds a Guinness World Record, a scale no other Vellore campus fest matches.

The story of VIT Vellore

Dr G. Viswanathan founded the institution in 1984 as Vellore Engineering College, a self-financing engineering college in Tamil Nadu. It became a deemed university in 2001 and was renamed VIT University in September 2006.

VIT grew quickly beyond Vellore. A 192-acre Chennai campus followed, and sister universities now run in Amaravati, Bhopal and Bengaluru, with an international campus in Mauritius. Across Vellore and Chennai alone, VIT has more than 51,000 students.

Its academic signature is FFCS, the Fully Flexible Credit System, which lets students choose courses, class timings and course load each semester. VIT ranked 19th overall in NIRF 2024.

What the campus is like socially

VIT is a campus at real scale. Students navigate a map of buildings known mostly by initials, eat across a long list of food courts and stalls, and live in large hostel blocks. The size means you can find a group for almost anything, from robotics to film to dance.

FFCS shapes the social rhythm too. Because every student builds a personal timetable, registration day is a shared stress test and friend groups often form around who managed to get the same slots. Weekends are for club work, fest prep and trips into Vellore town.

Traditions every VITian knows

  • Riviera: VIT's four-day international sports and cultural fest every February. The 2025 edition drew over 45,000 attendees, and the fest holds a Guinness World Record.
  • Riviera pro-shows: Big nights with artists like Sunidhi Chauhan, Benny Dayal and Ritviz, plus guests such as cricketer Mithali Raj.
  • FFCS registration: The semester ritual of racing to grab preferred courses, faculty and time slots.
  • Vibrance: The sister fest at VIT Chennai, held in late February or early March.

Campus lore and insider spots

  • Campus by initials: Freshers spend their first week decoding building names that everyone uses as abbreviations.
  • Build-your-own timetable: FFCS means two roommates in the same branch can have completely different weeks.
  • The Navy pilot: Biotechnology graduate Shubhangi Swaroop became the Indian Navy's first female pilot.

How to find your people here

At VIT Vellore, a technical club, hackathon team, or the fest organizing crew is the fastest way to meet people outside your own branch.

Fests and societies at VIT Vellore

  • Riviera

Notable societies

  • RoboVITics

Societies worth knowing at VIT Vellore

  • RoboVITics: The robotics club, known for building rovers and competing in national contests.
  • The Electronics Club (TEC): Hands-on electronics projects, workshops and hackathons.
  • VIT Blockchain Community: A student group building and teaching blockchain and Web3 projects.
  • Riviera organising teams: Hundreds of students run the fest across events, sponsorship and logistics.

Careers, internships and placements

VIT runs one of India's largest campus recruitment drives, with tech, consulting, IT services and core engineering companies hiring in large numbers. Computer science and allied branches see the most product company interest, while core branches draw manufacturing and engineering firms.

With a batch this size, outcomes vary widely. Students who build projects through clubs, internships and hackathons tend to stand out, and many graduates head abroad for master's degrees.

Notable alumni

  • Soumith Chintala: Co-creator of the PyTorch deep learning framework and CTO of Thinking Machines Lab.
  • Shubhangi Swaroop: The Indian Navy's first female pilot, who studied biotechnology engineering at VIT.
  • Anand Prakash: Security researcher known for finding bugs in major platforms, listed among VIT alumni.

Rivalries and eternal debates

The private engineering debate never ends: VIT, Manipal, SRM and BITS. VIT students point to scale, FFCS flexibility and Riviera, Manipal fans to the campus town and BITS fans to academics. Inside the family, Vellore students tend to treat their campus as the original VIT.

What VIT Vellore is talking about now

VIT keeps expanding across its sister campuses while Vellore remains the flagship. Riviera lineups, FFCS registration and placement season are the moments that dominate campus chat.
